We mulched, planted native plants purchased from Herring Run Nursery and cleaned up the neighborhood with the help of 28 volunteers including staff, Power Project families and others from the community. Neighbors came out to say hello and tour our building and Whole Foods donated a healthy and tasty lunch for all! It was a great day and we couldn’t have done it without our wonderful volunteers!

Celebrated dancer Niss Albaig held a free salsa lesson and DJ Stylo spun great tunes that kept our event upbeat and fun. Red Maple generously allowed us to use their space for our event and donated 20% of the bar and food sales.

Staff took donations at the door and attendees were able to browse student artwork from the Power Project. We also held a silent action of Orioles memorabilia which included framed pictures and signed baseball cards. One of the bartenders was delighted when she won!

Board President Lauren Haney gave an introduction and thanked everyone for coming and even bought a couple of the students’ prints for her apartment. Other Board members in attendance include Carrie Green and Tyra Appleby.

The event was a great way for the staff, volunteers, Board members and guests to socialize and we hope to do it again soon!

A Short Lesson on Rain Gardens

What is a rain garden anyway?

A rain garden is a shallow garden installed with native plants to soak up excess rain water that would normally flow to local bodies of water.

Why are rain gardens important?

Rain gardens prevent rain and storm water run off from transporting harmful pollutants to important local bodies of water. This is especially important for Baltimore! Help protect our bay; join us for a day of beautification and trash clean up in Reservoir Hill!

The Details
The Power Project, a youth development program of the St. Francis Neighborhood Center, is installing a rain garden on the southwest corner of the center’s property. Please come support our greening effort in Reservoir Hill on Saturday, April 20 from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm!

Volunteers Will:
- Plant 200 plants
- Help residents pick up trash in surrounding area
- Run the day’s activities which may include: setting up, cleaning up, & running games

*Volunteers should wear clothing appropriate for working outdoors including closed-toe shoes. Don’t forget to bring water!*

Come experience food, fun, and community at the St. Francis Neighborhood Center! All volunteers will receive free food compliments of our dedicated partner, Wholefoods Market Harbor East!
