Volunteer Coordinator

Company Summary

St. Francis Neighborhood Center is the oldest continually-operating neighborhood center providing enrichment in all of Baltimore City! Our mission is to dismantle inequity by cultivating community connections through tailored education and social interventions for West Baltimore. We were founded to serve a growing segment of our community in need of inaccessible services, offering transformative out-of-school programs, weekly food distributions, annual resource fairs, tailored programming for older adults, and more. For over 60 years, we have continuously evolved to develop programs in response to present needs. Our programs build self-esteem as well as academic, emotional, interpersonal, social, and community development that works to address complex challenges in an effort to break the cycles of urban poverty. In an average month, we serve over 500 adults, youth, and families. 

Job Description:

The Volunteer Coordinator provides support services that are critical in sustaining SFNC programs and community wide opportunities. They work on the center’s program team, who are highly collaborative in implementing youth programs, community events, and support services. The VC aims to develop and leverage strong community partnerships to increase support, understanding, and participation in SFNC’s work overall. This is a heavily goals based position with quarterly goals being established for volunteer participation.

Schedule:

This position is full time, 40 hours/week, 10:00 am-6:00 pm during the school year; 9-5 during summer months. Some weekends may be required if needed

Job Responsibilities:

Volunteer Management: The Volunteer Coordinator plays a critical role in the management of volunteers to support in-house and community-wide programming for St. Francis Neighborhood Center. These responsibilities include:

  • Lead the recruitment, and background check process for new volunteers. Manage the retainment of a consistent group of volunteers to support all needed programming, both in and outside of the organization including youth programs, org-wide fundraisers and events, weekly food distributions and community engagement events/activities.
  • Train and supervise volunteers in programmatic expectations and best practices including the use of restorative behavior management. Lead the tiered response to volunteers who do not meet these expectations.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for volunteers and volunteer opportunities.
  • Serve as the main channel of programmatic updates regarding volunteer opportunities and activities through social media and newsletters.
  • Maintain a database of all volunteer activities, aiming to meet quarterly goals for engagement and activity achievement. Collect and manage consistent data that will be used toward annual org-wide reporting.
  • Along with the Program Director, plan for and implement summer service learning opportunities for Kindergarten-12th grade students
  • Lead the planning and implementation of volunteer appreciation activities

Assist Community Engagement Manager: Working under the Community Engagement Manager, the VC contributes to the creation and sustainability of community partnerships and events. The VC is responsible for:

  • The establishment and maintenance of partnerships with schools served by the Power Project and Summer of Service Excursion programs including consistent communication around tutoring, data collection, and student updates.
  • Representing SFNC as a whole and volunteer opportunities at partner and community events. This includes creating and leading presentations for potential partners, schools, and community members.
  • Assist with the planning for and day-of operations of community events, including but not limited to assisting the assignments for staff, board, alongside the volunteers at events.
  • Attend all planning meetings as requested.
  • Find, facilitate, and lead corporate team volunteer days.
  • Support in acquiring documents from partnering schools such as IEP/504 Plans, report cards, teacher behavioral evaluations, testing results, etc.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Attend weekly meetings with VC’s direct supervisor. Attend bi-weekly program staff meetings and full-time staff meetings.
  • Attends and assists with the annual Resource Fair/Festival and other organizational event planning & attendance at such Center events (fundraisers, Stoop Nights, Giving Tree, etc.).
  • Serve as member of the Steering Committee and Parent Committee
  • Assist directly in youth programming as requested by the Program Director
  • Serves as a mentor/supervisor to one high school intern as requested 
  • Writes articles for organizational newsletter and website; one weekly social media post and email to volunteers.
  • Additional duties as needed/required.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a non-profit environment or education industry is a plus
  • Strong goal setting skills and goal achievement history
  • Ability to multi-task and successfully prioritize workload
  • Experience with data management and reporting
  • Knowledge of Baltimore City School systems, and IEP/504 Plans
  • Excellent computer and software skills, especially Google Suite and Microsoft Office
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Highly detail-oriented, organized and analytical
  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills

Salary Range: $40,000-43,000

Benefits: 2 weeks paid vacation, 80 hours of sick leave, and paid holidays. Medical, dental and vision paid 100% by employer after the 1st of the month from date of hire. 403(b)plan. Short-Term Disability, Life and AD&D included.


Part-Time Teacher

Job Description:

The Part-Time Teacher is responsible for classroom management and education/support of 5th and 6th grade students, developing and implementing day to day youth programming in the following areas: project-based service learning, academic and art enrichment, math games and activities, literacy, homework help, character building, & mentorship. 

Schedule:

This position is part-time. During the school year, teachers work Monday-Thursday, 2:30-6:00pm in-person with flexible remote planning/prep hours on Fridays. During the summer, they work Monday-Thursday, 9:00am-3:00pm with flexible remote planning/prep hours on Fridays.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Plan, implement and compile activities pertaining to our year-long themes: nonviolent communication, identity, character development, academic and art enrichment and PATHS curriculum
  • Service Learning/Project-Based Learning: The small group will learn each topic and present a creative project addressing a topic of their choice at the end of the program; the teacher will teach, encourage, and assist in guiding their group through this process
  • Classroom management and instruction.
  • Create and implement academic and enrichment curriculum
  • Record daily log data for each youth to track improvements; attendance, behavior, etc..
  • Implement academic assessments to quantify academic success with the youth
  • Outreach to potential partner organizations and businesses.
  • Volunteer recruitment & management in the classroom
  • Assist with social media as needed
  • Family engagement & community meetings; Center events
  • Personal and professional development
  • Assist with Open House/Orientation
  • Attend and assist with Resource Fair; encourage recruitment and community engagement
  • Help with Recruitment & Enrollment; strengthen retention and recruitment process
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Must hold a valid teaching license with the state of Maryland
  • Experience in a non-profit environment or education industry is a plus
  • Four-year college degree, with an Education focus
  • At least three years of education experience
  • Excellent software skills, especially with Microsoft Office and the Google Suite
  • Ability to work effectively both with and without supervision
  • Ability to multi-task and successfully prioritize workload
  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment
  • Strong goal-setting skills and goal achievement history

Compensation: $35/hour
